Greenpeace ranks Apple last

April 4th, 2007 by Brendon Chase

Greenpeace has placed Apple last when it comes to environmental friendliness when compared to other electronics makers.

The annual Greenpeace report ranked major computer and gadget makers according to their ability to limit toxic waste in products and having policies in place that encourage expired products to be recycled.

Chinese PC maker Lenovo replaced phone maker Nokia to top the list this year. Click here to see the rankings.

According to a Businessweek.com report Apple spokesperson Sheryl Seitz responded to the findings:

We disagree with Greenpeace's rating and the criteria they chose. Apple has a strong environmental track record and has led the industry in restricting and banning toxic substances such as mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium, as well as many BFRs (brominated flame retardants).

Greenpeace are petitioning Apple to make greener products by launching a Web site called "Green my Apple". The site is intended to inform consumers on the environmental impact of Apple products, show users how to recycle products, and petitioning the community to take action by writing to Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, about being green.
