Get your iPod video kicks with My Tube

April 8th, 2008 by Ella Morton

iPod docks with video displays haven't made much of a splash in Australia. Makes sense given the lack of TV shows and movies in the Oz iTunes store, but with all iPod models except the Shuffle now supporting video, perhaps it's time.

Touch, My Tube

That's what AVLabs reckons, anyway. Today the company announced the My Tube, a speaker dock with a 7-inch widescreen LCD. The dock is compatible with all current iPods -- bar that sporty Shuffle, obviously -- and will hit stores in May for AU$399.95.

As you'd expect from the name, the product is cylindrical, and recalls the 80s-tastic boombox that was the Altec Lansing iM7.

Specs-wise you get an AV input, USB port, 3-in-1 memory card reader and a line-in socket. That means that in addition to watching the vids on your iPod, you can view pics and footage from a USB key, memory card or camcorder.

The jury's out on whether people will bother with all this when they could just use a laptop, but the My Tube will certainly sound better than the dodgy speakers on your good old thigh-burner. And look better on the bedside table too.

If you've got an iPod Touch and Wi-Fi access, you might even be able to watch YouTube on the My Tube. There's a theory we'll be putting to the test when we review the speaker in the coming weeks.
