How-to: Put DVD movies on the iPhone or iPod touch
February 22nd, 2008 by iPhoneAtlasHandBrake, a free Mac OS X/Windows utility for ripping videos from DVDs and saving them in various formats — including MP4 files that are playable by the iPhone/iPod Touch — has been updated to include the ability to generate iPhone-compatible anamorphic video at its full size. As such, we’ve put together a quick guide for moving DVD video to the iPhone/iPod touch.

* Insert the desired DVD into your computer’s optical drive
* Download HandBrake and launch the application
* You should be presented with a prompt to open a source. If not, select File > Open Source and choose your DVD.
* Select Presets > Update Presets.
* Click the “Toggle Presets” button in the upper right corner of the main window.
* Select iPhone/iPod Touch from the resulting list
* Click the “Start” button in the upper-left of the main window
* Click the “Show Queue” button, then the arrow next to your movie’s name. This will tell you where HandBrake is saving the resulting .MP4 file. Under Mac OS X, it’s the Desktop by default. Wait until the video has been saved.
* Launch iTunes, and select File > Import. Choose the MP4 file created by HandBrake
* Connect your iPhone/iPod Touch and select it in iTunes.
* Go to the “Video” tab and make sure that the “Sync Movies” box is checked, and your newly created MP4 file is selected.
* Click the “Sync” button
Your movie should now be stored on your iPhone/iPod Touch and available for viewing.

After the import to iTunes step it's also worth checking to see whether or not the file now has two opies, one in your iTunes library and the other in the original location. Do this in iTunes by right-clicking (ctrl-clicking) the movie in iTunes and choosing Show in Finder (Show in Windows Explorer on a PC) and checking where the file is. If it's different from the original location and the file is also still in the original location, dleete the original, after all, movie files can get big and there's no need to have two copies of them... I have been impressed by the quality produced by Handbrake in ripping movies for my iPod Touch. BTW - There are Handbrake versions for OS X, Windows and Linux (http://handbrake.fr/?article=download)

Great tip John. The same could be said for music folders on your Mac -- make sure there isn't two copies of the same mp3s!

I always use HandBrake to help me convert DVD movies to MP4 format for playback on my iPod touch. I am fond of it so much. Here is another guide that I refer to http://macdvdripper.wordpress.com/2008/01/21/how-to-rip-dvd-on-mac-with-handbrake/ P.S. My OS is based on Mac.

The new feature offers anamorphic video for iPhone "at full size". However the iPhone/iPod touch preset mentioned above shrinks the video down to iPhone/iPod touch screen size. So how should one achieve the "full size"? I've tried the "Normal" preset but it was incompatible with the iPod touch.
