How to make your own iPhone ringtones

March 18th, 2010 by Joseph Hanlon

If the back of teen music magazines are to be trusted then we can safely assume that mobile phone ringtones are big business, and, if you were the new kid on the block selling mobile phones, like Apple, you'd be crazy not to charge a motza for these audio snippets.

This doesn't mean we should have to pay for them. After paying higher than average prices for iPhone contracts, are you really about to fork out more money for 15-second clips of your favourite songs? We don't think this is fair and to right this injustice we show you how to make your very own iPhone ringtones for free. All you'll need is an iPhone (of course), iTunes and a swag of MP3 files.

  1. Open iTunes and select your favourite MP3 audio file.
  2. Right-click (Cmd-click for Macs) on this file in your library to bring up the context menu.
  3. Select Get Info

  4. This will open a new dialogue box showing various details about the audio file. Select the Options tab.

  5. Check the boxes next to both Start Time and Stop Time and enter the times you want your new ringtone to start and stop (the maximum length is 40 seconds) then click OK.

  6. This will return you to your music library.

  7. Right-click (Cmd-click) on the same music file again and this time select Convert Selection to AAC.

  8. iTunes will process this briefly and insert the new ringtone-sized file under the original file in your library.

  9. Right-click (Cmd-click) on the newly created file and select: "Show in Windows Explorer (or Finder on a Mac)"

A new dialogue box will open showing you the location of this file. Select the file and rename it, changing the file extension from ".m4a" to ".m4r". Windows will warn you that this change may make the file unstable, but continue anyway.

Back in iTunes, delete the ringtone file you've created from your library, then import the renamed ".m4r" file into your library. Connect your iPhone and sync your playlist. You may have to manually drag the .m4r file into the Ringtones section on your iPhone. With your iPhone synced this file is now ready to be used as a ringtone.

I just tried this and 1) the new ringtone would not drag into my ringtone folder on my iPhone and 2) it would not show up as a ringtone from my iPhone playlist. Any suggestions on getting iPhone to allow me to drag into my ringtones?

Try removing the new ringtone from your library first without deleting the file itself. Then from Finder, drag the file to the ringtone section of your library. Same thing happened to me and that should do the trick.

A better way to create your own ringtones for the iPhone is to use garageband (on Mac's only) just drag in the audio file from the finder menu or the Media bar, trim it to the desired length and go to the "share" option in the top menu bar then select "send ringtone to iTunes" and the ringtone will be taken into iTunes waiting to be put onto your iPhone.

OMG This actually works people...thank you and I was going crazy with nakko yesterday you guys are the best UM for those who can't find the "Convert to aac" options...just use an external program to convert the ringtone from MP3 to AAC instead I Downloaded the Bonkenc v1.09 and it works in a flash then change it from mp4 to m4r and drag it directly to itunes library ringtone folder then from there to iphone itself... love you guys

mygosh.. follow the steps. 1. import ur music file into itunes 8 (yes, it works for 8) 2. right click on d file, select "Get Info" 3. click on "Options", check the boxes labelled "Start Time" and "Stop Time". Set start time to 0, stop time to 0:40. (u can play around here to get the bit u want). Click OK. 4. Right click the same file, select "Create AAC version" 5. Right click the same file, select "Show in WIndows Explorer" 6. Change the extension from m4a to m4r in the window that just opened. If no extensions are shown, in your explorer window, click on: Tools>Folder Options>View. Make sure the "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" box is UNCHECKED. Click OK all the way. Now, change extension of created file to m4r. 7. Go back to iTunes. Delete the file that was created. 8. Drag the m4r file into iTunes. 9. Sync your iPhone w/ ur com. Voila! Check it out. Thanks Jo Hanlon for making the world more affordable for the poor people!! =D

I read in another iphone forum to change the filename to be shorter - I shortened mine to a single word, re-synced and then they showed up - don't think you can change message tone without jailbreak tho'

WHy has no one mentioned using Garageband to create your ringtones? I found this to be the easiest way since you get an option to share as ringtone which is then transferred to iTunes... That way, you can even funk the tone up adding various fx or voiceovers

HELP! I just created several ringtones successfully, synched them successfully BUT, on my iPhone, the ringtone has replaced the entire pre-existing song in my iTunes with the new 30 second ringtone. I tried renaming the song by putting an "R" at the end of the title to denote ringtone, but it didn't work. In my iTunes on my pc it has not replaced it, but on my iPod on the iPhone it has. Has this happened to anyone? Can anyone help? Thanks

Work-around for iTunes 9. Follow the instructions as to Joseph's post but iTunes 9 doesn't allow you to create ACC files. Create an mp3 file, (right-click and your song of choice after you have set the times as described above and select "Create MP3 version"). After then new file is create, right click and select "Show in Windows Explorer". Now delete the song from your iTunes Lib but don't delete the file. Download "Any audio converter" (Free) http://www.any-audio-converter.com/download.php convert your file (in the explorer window) to a .m4a file with "Any audio Converter", rename the new file to a .m4r file and drag it into iTunes. Now sync with your iPhone and you will have your own customized ringtone! SM 8-)

It works spot on and in iTunes 9. For the guy who says when it syncs only part of the song after the conversion, uncheck the start and stop from the original version - Oops. Secondly, 4 people who cannot sync it to their iPhone, don't forget to tick the ringtones tab before you sync it. Other than that, all works fine. Also, thanks Owen for the m4r tip - forgot about that bit.
